Hotels in Higashiizu: ryokans and sea-view stays

Atagawa Ocean Resort is the easy first stay in Higashiizu, with a balcony facing the Pacific, baths above the shore and a buffet full of seafood. Along the coast, ryokans serve dinner in your room, set private tubs among trees and look out over the waves.

Established seafront stays

Atagawa Ocean Resort opens onto the seafront, with a balcony and an ocean view in every room. Twin and triple rooms face the sea; Japanese-Western rooms higher in the building have tatami space, and corner rooms are larger. Both the indoor and open-air hot-spring baths look across the Pacific. The oceanfront restaurant looks out over the same open water.

At ATAGAWA BOLD KITCHEN, dinner ranges from seafood bowls and kinmedai acqua pazza to steak; dried fish and wasabi rice are part of breakfast. Fiume Caldo serves course dinners. From Izu-Atagawa, the walk to the Atagawa seafront takes about five minutes, or a reserved station transfer carries the luggage down. Send the party size and train arrival time when arranging it. Dinner-plan arrivals must be before 18:00.

Atagawa ryokans

Atagawakan serves seafood kaiseki in the guest room, with the sea and Izu Oshima beyond the veranda seating area. Japanese rooms have tatami and futons; high-floor twins have beds. The Asahi suite combines a living area and twin bedroom with its own open-air hot-spring bath. Shikainami’s communal indoor pool faces the sea, and the outdoor bath opens to the sky.

The four Tsubaki private baths are made from blue ceramic, stone, round wood and hinoki. A one-hour reservation costs ¥2,000 (about US$13) per room. Meal plans include kinmedai, abalone or Ise lobster through the dinner courses and need advance booking. The station is about seven minutes away on foot; pickup can be arranged ahead or by calling from Izu-Atagawa.

Atagawa Prince stands above the hot-spring town, looking toward the Izu Islands. On the roof, Kunpu opens toward the sea and sky; strong wind or heavy rain can close it. Indoors and out, Umi-iro and Sora-iro combine hinoki, rock and ceramic tubs with herbal or tea baths and saunas. The men’s and women’s bathing areas swap in the morning.

The standard Japanese room has an indoor hot-spring bath, the compact mountain-side twin uses the communal baths, and the Qoomo daybed cabin has twin beds and an outdoor tub. For a private soak facing greenery, Tsukiakari has a hinoki tub and Hoshiakari a round ceramic bath. Book at reception on arrival.

Dinner is a Japanese course meal with whole simmered kinmedai, followed next morning by pot-cooked rice, steamed vegetables and miso soup. Meals are served in dining rooms. The ten-minute station walk climbs steep slopes and stairs; a minibus meets afternoon trains.

Inatori and Hokkawa

Inatori Tokai Hotel Yuen has open-air pools facing the Izu islands and an enclosed rock cave bath. Broad windows look over the sea from the indoor pools. There are walking and herbal baths too. For a private session, Kaishuen is a boat-shaped tub high above the sea; Nagisa is down beside the waves. Each booking lasts 50 minutes. Guest rooms range from futon rooms to Western twins and suites with open-air or semi-open-air baths.

Whole simmered kinmedai anchors the seafood kaiseki, with lobster or abalone in the richer courses. Breakfast is usually a Japanese set with dried horse mackerel, changing to a buffet during some holiday periods. From Izu-Inatori, the walk takes about fifteen minutes. A free minibus collects guests between 14:00 and 18:00 with the train arrival supplied in advance or by a same-day call.

Hokkawa Onsen Hotel rises straight above the rocky Hokkawa shore, with ocean and sunrise views from every room. Its panoramic indoor baths are on the eleventh floor. Japanese rooms in the main building and annex have their own bathrooms; some also have private open-air baths. Fourth-floor annex rooms involve a change of elevator and some stairs. The rooftop Kuchu Yuen bath is closed for renovation, with reopening announced for November 1, 2026.

Seafood kaiseki in the dining hall includes sashimi, simmered fish and grilled live abalone. Dinner must be booked before arrival and cannot be added at check-in. A free reserved shuttle serves Izu-Hokkawa and Izu-Atagawa; the latter receives the direct Odoriko from Tokyo. Send the train arrival time when reserving the ride online by the previous day.

Private-bath stay in Okawa

Isaribi is a small hillside inn overlooking Sagami Bay, with a private open-air hot-spring bath in every room. The tubs are made from hinoki, natural stone, Izu stone or Towada stone; some can be enclosed with windows. Beyond the room, larger indoor baths connect to stone-lined outdoor pools among trees. Guests use these privately without advance reservation, with a room QR code showing whether they are occupied.

Dinner is kaiseki in the room or a changing menu with tabletop charcoal cooking in the Zen dining room, depending on the plan. At breakfast, guests choose their Izu dried fish and eat it with pot-cooked rice, chawanmushi and salad. Check-out is at noon. Izu-Okawa station is about eight minutes away on foot, with a narrow, steep approach; prearranged pickup runs from 14:30 to 19:00. Upper-floor rooms are reached by stairs.
